Teenage love is so intense, and Kelly Hashway captured that intensity perfectly in The Monster Within. I loved the main characters, Sam and Ethan, and the love they shared. The dark plot of this novel makes for a compelling read that is hard to put down. The Monster Within, by Kelly Hashway has all the elements I love in a good young adult fantasy novel everlasting love, witches, resurrection, and a good dosage of suspense to keep you turning the pages.

Although she isn’t sure if she can trust them. But there are clues, seemingly everywhere, and someone wants her to know the truth. On top of that, Ethan is unwilling to tell her how he brought her back. Sam develops psychic visions of her victims, further causing unrest within her soul. Soon enough, the monster within her takes over as she looks on helplessly… The will to live outweighs any moral dilemmas she battles. Before the dirt is washed from her body, she already knows something is wrong. Sam has been resurrected from the dead by her well-meaning boyfriend, Ethan. Overall started out well, but went downhill, The ending was quite open, and there was room for a sequel, but I can’t say that I would want to read it if it was written.

Sam’s naivety was at an all-time high, and the ‘acceptance’ that Ethan and Sam gained from certain parties was an absolute joke! I found some of the things that happened at the end to be quite ridiculous though. The ending was okay, but I was glad that the story was over. He gave up his whole life for her, and she still wasn’t sure? Let’s just say that the romance didn’t blow me away. There was some romance – obviously Ethan loved Sam enough to bring her back from the dead, but considering that, we then had to put up with the same old ‘I’m not ready to have sex’ stuff that we get in plenty of other books, which considering she wanted to have sex before she died seemed a little redundant. I stuck the kindle on ‘text-to-speech’ and listened to it for a couple of hours whilst doing other stuff, which did seem to help a bit, but when I went back to reading it myself I again just wanted it to end already. The story dragged, there was a lack of answers, there was a lot of inconsequential stuff in there that didn’t move the story along, and I just got bored. Unfortunately though I had begun to lose interest by the 20% mark. “My life began the second I pulled myself out of my grave and looked into his beautiful blue eyes.” I mean for an opening line, this is pretty good – The storyline in this started out okay, but I lost interest. Sam was an okay character, but she was such a liar! Almost every time she opened her mouth, lies spewed out like she couldn’t control them! How she kept up with all the lies she told I don’t know! That being said Sam also came across as a bit of a push-over, she didn’t really stand up for herself all that much, and instead had a pity-party all the time over how awful it was that she kept killing people! This book started out okay, but I lost interest. How did Ethan bring her back? What is wrong with her? And will she ever be normal again?

Thanks to Spencer Hill Press and NetGalley.)ġ7-year-old Sam died from cancer, but now she’s alive again, and it’s all thanks to her boyfriend Ethan, if only he would reveal to her how he brought her back.īut something isn’t quite right, and Sam suddenly finds herself draining the life from other people to remain alive herself.
